What is a Hunger-Fighting Hero?
Bellingham Food Bank’s Hunger-Fighting Heroes believe that families in Whatcom County deserve fresh food. And plenty of it. They believe that hunger is unacceptable. They believe that ending hunger is possible. They have seen the food bank fight hunger day in and day out.
They can’t believe how much hunger there is in Whatcom County. And they are ready and willing to do something about it. Something big. Something brave. Something epic.
They have seen us step up to meet the growing demand for our services and they are ready to join forces to make sure that no child, no senior, no parent, no family—no one in our community goes hungry. They know we make the most of every donation. They know this is the only way we can meet our mission of getting MORE food, and BETTER food, to MORE families throughout Whatcom County.
More Food.
Hunger in Bellingham and Whatcom County is real and has grown tremendously in recent years. Right now, one in five local families fights to keep food on their table. Each week, 1,350 families visit our food bank. 50% of the people who walk through our doors are children and seniors. And we’re seeing more and more people every year.
Thanks to our donors and hunger-relief partners, we have been able to keep up with the growing demand for food. Donors like you support our work with your investment. We stretch your investment by getting food at prices only food banks can get. By working smart, we give out more than 5.5 million pounds of food every year—enough to fill 135 semi-trucks. That’s a lot of food for local families.
Better Food.
But it’s not just about the amount of food. It’s about the quality of that food. It’s about better food. It’s about fresh food. Our families deserve the food we all want, and need, to be healthy. That means delicious food that is nutrient dense, and fresh and local whenever possible. Sure, we still hand out pasta, dried beans, and canned tuna—but our food bank is about so much more than that. It’s about dignity. That’s why we do everything we can to get farm-fresh produce, eggs, milk, and fresh proteins. This is the type of food our families need. And it is the type of food they deserve.
